Happy Birthday Amy!!!

Amy and Jamie threw a great party this past weekend for Amy's birthday.

We had a great brunch in their apartment with lots of fabulous people.

Like Kelly! (Note the Halloween splendor all around. Jamie and Kathy and Jack spent a lot of time bedazzling the apartment.)

Then we went down to the park for a rousing game of volleyball...

... and pumpkin carving! Woo-hoo!

Happy birthday Amy! Thanks for the great party, guys. And good luck to Amy's friend Liz who can be seen here in the background. She is due with her first baby any day now.

Brunch!

Patrick's aunt Pat and her sweet kids Kenny, Chris, Nick and Erica invited us to lovely brunch at the boys' house in Irvine. The food was amazing and the company was great. We foolishly waited to carve our pumpkins until after lunch - only to realize that we all felt too much like pumpkins, ourselves! Thanks for cooking for us guys and for the pumkins! We all had a great time.

My sister Bell lives three miles away from Patrick's cousins, so my family totally crashed Patrick's family party.

Before lunch, Nick and Chris took us on a walk around the very cool grounds surrounding their apartment. There were plenty of rocks for Jack to climb. And a very cool empty beach/pool which the boys loved.

More rocks for Jack to climb. We found Jack like this at the end of a bridge.

Not to be outdone, Finn and Nick climbed up too. Have I mentioned how much our boys love Pat's boys?
This dog loved Bell, or the ball in her hand, we weren't sure which. All I know is the dog was way cuter than the icky rubber worm that Finn and Grandma Kathi found. Even Bell was grossed out and that's saying something!
Worm aside, it was a wonderful day. Thank you again for inviting us over, guys. We had a lovely time.

20th High School Reunion

Well, I went to my 20th high school reunion a couple of weeks ago. Oddly enough, I remember being at Patrick's house the night that Mike was going to his 20th reunion. How quickly time flies. Sadly, it was a complete bust. What can I say, Eagle Rock is a slacker neighborhood. (We had an 11th high school reunion last time because no one got our 10-year together.) Plus, they scheduled this reunion the same night as the Eagle Rock music festival, which, I have to say, did sound like more fun than a reunion. At any rate, Julie was wise enough to stay home. Michelle and I, however, have stayed friends with Camilo, our class president, so off we went. Don't we look bright-eyed and hopeful? At least we had fun at the end of the night sitting with Leigh and Graciela in the spinning bar at the top of the Bonaventure.

Playin'!!!

Happy Birthday Bobby!! This one's from Bob's birthday in 1974. Is it punk rock? No, but I think it's pretty great that Bobby completely messes up the words to his own song, and this is the one they put in the movie!!

Education!!!

Cheers to Ariana Huffington for creating a new online site devoted to education! You can see it here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/education/

It starts off with some terrific articles - not all of which I agree with - but all better than the Los Angeles Times idiotic editorial over the weekend. Good luck to HuffPost!!

Stanley!!!

Friday Poem

Stanley Kunitz

by Mary Oliver

I used to imagine him
coming from his house, like Merlin
strolling with important gestures
through the garden
where everything grows so thickly,
where birds sing, little snakes lie
on the boughs, thinking of nothing
but their own good lives,
where petals float upward,
their colors exploding,
and trees open their moist
pages of thunder -
it has happened every summer for years.

But now I know more
about the great wheel of growth,
and decay, and rebirth,
and know my vision for a falsehood.
Now I see him coming from the house -
I see him on his knees,
cutting away the diseased, the superfluous,
coaxing the new,
know that the hour of fulfillment
is buried in years of patience -
yet willing to labor like that
on the mortal wheel.

Oh, what good it does the heart
to know it isn’t magic!
Like the human child I am
I rush to imitate -
I watch him as he bends
among the leaves and vines
to hook some weed or other;
I think of him there
raking and trimming, stirring up
those sheets of fire
between the smothering weights of earth,
the wild and shapeless air.
