Happy 64th birthday to Bill Kreutzmann!!!! The Grateful Dead had two drummers for most of their history, and Mickey Hart is probably the better known of the two because of his more flamboyant personality, as well as his significant film work (he did most of the music for Apocalypse Now).
But those in the know would claim that Kreutzmann was really the heart of the Dead's wonderful rhythm, and he is a talented jazz and world music player as well. Nothing against Mickey Hart, who added a great deal of color to the Dead's sound, but personally, my favorite period of the Dead's thirty year run was the period in the early 70's when Mickey left the band for personal reasons, and it was just Kreutzmann keeping the beat.
When he's on his own, you can hear just how incredible his playing really is, and I think that he's one of the most underrated of the 60's era rock drummers.
But I would think that : )
Happy birthday Billy!!!
