Fern Dell!!!

I always think that it's crazy that there are people who live in L.A. and have never heard of Griffith Park. It's such a huge part of our lives (I'm staring at it right now) that it seems bizzare that anyone here could not know it exists, but I've talked to many people who have either never been there, or just didn't realize that that's what it was. There are so many things to do there, that it's insane, but one of the prettiest (and least known) parts of Griffith Park is Fern Dell. It's right where Los Feliz Blvd. turns down into Hollywood, and seems to have aspects of old Hollywood mixed in with the beautiful surroundings.

For one thing, it's so dramatic, with huge cypress trees towering over everything, and a great stream that comes down through the "dell" and makes the whole thing totally primordial looking. It also has many of the pointless and beautiful architectural details that lurk around that fantastic part of Los Angeles (like Wattles Park too). Strange grottos and statuary, plus the best protective railing in the city!

Anyway, Fern Dell is pretty great, despite the assorted crazies who hang around there. One of the best things about it is the Trails Restaurant. This is at the top of the park, before the road starts winding up to the Observatory, and is a pretty recent addition. It's so weird to see this little restaurant in the middle of all of the nature, but it's such a perfect location - especially for a late Sunday breakfast! We met Josh, Adrienne, Lorelai & their dog Shadow and had a great time - the birds were flying around, there are stumps and hay bales for the kids to jump on, and we even saw a snake in a tree (although it turned out to be rubber).

The great thing is that the food is delicious! They have amazing homemade baked treats, lots of vegetarian food, and fresh fruit on everything. It's totally the kind of place that you would expect to find in Marin County or Eugene, but in the middle of a Los Angeles Park - weird and wonderful : ) Thanks to Josh & Adrienne for the great suggestion!

What a cute dog!!!! I want to squish him!
I find that since I homeschool I take advantage of stuff around my area that are fantastic resources... but like you said, NO ONE has ever heard of them. I kind of like it that way, but it's a little sad that people have great things/places around them and never care enough to find out or go!
Oh well, too bad for them I suppose... more for those of us that DO enjoy their towns' little plesures!
